Consider the Source – Philanthropy to Investing: Where Does Impact Fall?

Philanthropy and investing are two major parts of our lives and overall financial picture. With philanthropy, we give our time and money to a cause that we feel is important in hopes of making the world a better place. On the other hand, when we invest, we loan our money to a company or buy shares in a company with the goal of earning back more than we initially put it. And then there is impact investing, a strategy that has been brought to the forefront of wealth planning in recent months and seems to fall somewhere in the middle between philanthropy and investing, albeit in a way that is more complicated than it may seem.

For this episode of our “Consider the Source” video series, Omnia Family Wealth Co-Founder and Chief Operating Officer Michael Wagner aims to paint a clearer picture of what impact investing is and where it lays on that spectrum of philanthropy to investing.

Wagner specifically explains:

  • What impact investing is and the role it plays in both portfolios and the world
  • An overview on Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG)
  • The importance of Sustainable Development Goals (SDG)
  • How impact investing encompasses both ESG and SDG
  • How to determine if impact investing is right for you

During the video, Wagner emphasizes that there are a lot of great opportunities out there when it comes to impact investing. However, it is crucial to make sure that there is a process involved and that you are using the proper tools available.

The use of environmental, social and governance factors may impact investment exposure to issuers, industries, sectors, and countries, potentially resulting in higher or lower returns than a similar investment strategy without such screens.
