Michael Wagner Explains the Role of a Portfolio Manager to U.S. News & World Report
You’ve heard of a portfolio manager, you probably even have one, but do you know exactly what a portfolio manager does on a day-to-day basis? U.S. News & World Report recently turned to Omnia Family Wealth Co-Founder and Chief Operating Officer Michael Wagner for insight.
According to Wagner, “much of a portfolio manager’s day-to-day activities include reviewing data and synthesizing information. Those data include various economic reports, central-bank meeting outcomes and macroeconomic events.” A portfolio manager looks for data that can help build a sturdy portfolio to weather different market cycles. If data changes one’s view of the investing world, a manager may be required to change the asset allocation.
Most of the portfolio manager’s job is behind the scenes, and computer screen, as the manager must conduct quantitative analysis and research. However, managers also need to be able to clearly communicate complex ideas in a way that others outside of the field can understand. “You need to be able to take what can be a very complicated matter and talk about it plainly and clearly with people of various backgrounds and sophistication levels,” explains Wagner.
